MILANO MEETS LONDON: THE SOUTH KENSINGTON TOWNHOUSE
THE CURATED RESIDENCE
Set behind a classic stucco façade in South Kensington, this multi-level Victorian residence was conceived as a curated sanctuary where grand British architectural bones meet Italian decorative art. Drawing on our expertise as an Italian interior designer based in London, we approached the property not simply to renovate, but to orchestrate a home that feels historically grounded yet distinctly cosmopolitan.
Through a balance of disciplined plasterwork, tailor-made Italian joinery, and collector-grade furnishings, the interiors celebrate light, proportion, and texture across every level.
Preserving Architectural Heritage: Classical Mouldings & Volumes
The structural transformation began by reinstating the integrity of the property’s expansive vertical volumes. We undertook a meticulous restoration of the original period cornicing, repairing decades of wear and re-establishing the home’s classical rhythm.
To bring structural depth to the soaring walls, we designed extensive wall mouldings that frame each salon with architectural discipline. This geometric relief creates a timeless canvas that honors the property’s Victorian pedigree while welcoming contemporary art and tailored silhouettes. For an inside look into our approach, explore our guide on designing with classical mouldings and heritage cornicing to achieve modern luxury in period homes.
The Decorative Anchor: Fornasetti’s Architectural Surrealism
Serving as the unmistakable fil rouge of the residence, Fornasetti’s iconic Procuratie wallcovering brings a theatrical architectural dialogue into the living spaces. The repeating Venetian arches and colonnades introduce a rhythmic perspective that draws the eye through transitional galleries and reception alcoves, turning architectural transitions into immersive moments. Learn how we utilize scale, motifs, and texture in our editorial on creative ways to elevate interiors using luxury wallpaper.
To counterbalance the dynamic energy of the walls, the furnishings were selected to anchor the rooms with understated elegance:
- Minotti Living Ensemble: The main salon is centred around low-profile seating, sculptural armchairs, a curated coffee table, and plush textured rugs that establish an inviting, architectural lounge which has been sourced entirely from renowned Italian furniture house Minotti.
- Haute Couture Accents: Sumptuous Fendi rugs add tactile softness underfoot, paired with silk Hermès cushions that introduce sharp, refined color accents against tailored upholstery.
Bespoke Craftsmanship: Innovation in Joinery & Private Spaces
- The Custom-Lacquered Wallpaper Console: In the entrance gallery, we engineered a one-of-a-kind statement sideboard featuring Fornasetti wallpaper enveloped across bespoke millwork. The surface was finished using an exclusive, high-gloss Italian lacquering process developed specifically for this commission. This technique allowed us to fuse delicate print artistry with exceptional durability. Discover our studio’s philosophy and methodology for procuring bespoke Italian joinery and custom cabinetry.
- Atmospheric Bathrooms: Designed as sensorial jewel boxes, the renovated bathrooms integrate concealed linear LED illumination along architectural shadow gaps and subtle accent wallcoverings, creating an intimate, spa-like warmth away from the grand entertaining zones.

“ True luxury in a historic London home is never about erasing the past, but creating a timeless dialogue between architectural heritage and contemporary artistry & craftsmanship.”
PAOLO ROTA
True luxury in historic London architecture is never about erasure; it is about delicate tension. By anchoring the grand Victorian proportions of South Kensington with the avant-garde precision of Milanese design, we proved that heritage and modernity do not merely coexist, they actually elevate one another.
When historical pedigree meets uncompromising craftsmanship, a home transcends decoration to become a true collector’s archive. Because of this, every bespoke detail, from classical mouldings to custom lacquer, tells a cohesive, timeless story.
Balancing historic British restraint with the theatricality of Milanese modernism, this South Kensington transformation stands as proof that the most compelling interior spaces are born where classic architectural proportions meet uncompromising bespoke execution.
This philosophy remains a core pillar of our work as an Italian interior designer based in London, seamlessly uniting the enduring heritage of authentic Italian craftsmanship with British architectural influence.
